About
Having obtained my PhD from the Universities of Paris 12 and Magdeburg in 2003, I am assistant professor at the University of Mainz, Germany ("sociology of the university" at Center for Research on Education and Higher Education).
My research interests comprise constructivist macro social theory, notably the question how large populations are governed by large numbers (in the vein of governmentality studies), and micro analysis of written discourse. Against a background in poststructuralist theory, my long-term interest is to rethink the macro / micro divide against the background of a discursive sociology of knowledge. My methodological focus is on the complex organization of language in use, from the micro-level of its polyphonic organization to the macro-level of large collections of written text. While addressing questions of power, knowledge and social change, I have pursued research on academic as well as political discourses. My main publication is After Structuralism. The Discourse of Theory and the Intellectual Field in France, 2007 (German, to come out in English and French soon).
I'm currently preparing a comparative research project on the discursive construction of academic excellence against the background of digital communication technologies in higher education.
